Ta’ Marija, embodies the joyous, festive nature of the Maltese character. It is all about being welcomed like one of the family. Here, Maltese history and tradition are all around. The walls are adorned with traditional pots and pans, as well as photos of the premises in its previous incarnation as the “Whispers Knightclub” during the sixties, featuring prominent entertainers of the day. Wednesdays and Fridays bring live music and spirited, traditional folklore dance shows. Marija enthusiastically takes to the stage to welcome her guests of all nationalities, and fluently tells stories of Maltese history in various languages.
Food at Ta’ Marija is traditional Maltese with subtle modern touches. The Maltese Aperitif – composed of prickly pear liquor, Kinnie, and a secret ingredient – playfully opens up the palate. For starters, there are local appetizers such as farmhouse snails, or anchovy and cod fritters, as well as a delicious selection of homemade ravioli -fillings include lobster, rabbit, rikotta or gorgonzola- all hugely popular. Mains cover fowl and game, meats, and fish. Definitely try the baked boneless rabbit filled with rabbit liver, pistachios, walnuts and rice, served with a fruity Port Wine jus.
